Customer Service CV Example: UK Template & Writing Guide

A strong customer service CV should do more than say that you are friendly, helpful or a good communicator. Employers need to see what kind of customers you supported, which channels you used, the problems you handled and how effectively you resolved them.

This guide includes a UK customer service CV example, practical writing advice and an editable Microsoft Word template. It is suitable for customer service advisers, representatives, contact centre staff, customer care assistants and candidates moving into customer service from retail, hospitality or another customer-facing role.

If you need general help with CV structure before tailoring it to customer service, see our complete CV writing guide.

What should a customer service CV prove?

Customer service is often described using broad qualities such as communication, patience and problem-solving. Those qualities matter, but they become much stronger when your CV shows how you used them in a real service environment.

A recruiter should be able to understand five things quickly:

  • Who you supported: consumers, account holders, members, business customers or internal users.
  • How you supported them: telephone, email, live chat, face-to-face service or several channels.
  • What you handled: enquiries, complaints, refunds, orders, account issues, technical problems or service requests.
  • Which systems you used: CRM software, ticketing systems, order platforms or internal databases.
  • What happened as a result: faster resolution, fewer escalations, positive feedback, higher satisfaction or consistent service targets.

This gives the employer much more useful information than simply writing “excellent customer service skills”.

A good customer service CV normally follows a simple structure that lets the employer identify your experience and service capabilities without searching through long paragraphs.

What to write on a CV for customer service

Your CV should concentrate on the parts of your experience that affect the customer directly. A useful way to build each section is to think in terms of customer + issue + action + outcome.

For example:

Weak: Dealt with customer complaints.

Stronger: Investigated delivery and refund complaints, coordinated with warehouse and finance teams and kept customers updated until each case was resolved.

The second version tells the employer what kind of complaint was involved, what you actually did and how you managed the customer throughout the process.

Customer service CV summary examples

Your CV summary, sometimes called a professional profile or personal statement, should usually sit immediately below your contact details. Keep it short and make it specific to the type of customer service role you want.

Experienced customer service adviser

Customer Service Adviser with five years of experience supporting customers across telephone, email and live chat. Experienced in complaint resolution, account queries, order support and CRM case management within high-volume service environments. Confident handling complex conversations, coordinating with internal teams and maintaining accurate customer records.

Customer service representative

Customer Service Representative experienced in managing inbound enquiries, troubleshooting account issues and resolving customer concerns across multiple channels. Skilled in CRM systems, case documentation, escalation procedures and communicating clear solutions to customers.

Customer service CV summary with measurable results

Customer Service Adviser with three years of experience in e-commerce support, handling up to 50 enquiries per day across phone, email and live chat. Regularly met response-time and case-quality targets while resolving delivery, refund and account enquiries and maintaining accurate CRM records.

Only include figures that you can explain and genuinely support. A realistic description of your workload is better than adding impressive-looking percentages that you cannot verify.

Customer service skills CV example

A customer service skills section works best when it contains specific service abilities rather than a collection of personality words.

Generic wordingMore useful customer service wording
CommunicationTelephone, email and live chat support
Problem-solvingCustomer issue investigation and resolution
Good with peopleComplaint handling and difficult conversations
Computer skillsCRM, ticketing and customer database management
OrganisationManaging multiple open customer cases and follow-ups
TeamworkCoordinating with finance, operations, warehouse or technical teams

You can still mention qualities such as empathy, patience and active listening, but where possible show them through your experience rather than relying on the words alone.

The customer service skills employers need to see in context

Complaint handling

Do not stop at “handled complaints”. Explain the type of complaint and your role in solving it. You might investigate an incorrect charge, arrange a replacement, coordinate with another department or explain the next stage of an escalation.

CRM and case management

If you have used Salesforce, Zendesk, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics or an employer’s internal CRM, name it where relevant. More importantly, explain what you used it for: recording interactions, updating account information, logging complaints, scheduling follow-ups or tracking open cases.

Phone, email and live chat

The service channel matters. A candidate experienced in 60 inbound calls a day has a different background from someone managing B2B email cases or real-time web chat. State which channels you have worked with.

Escalation

Strong customer service does not mean solving every issue personally. Employers also need people who recognise when a complaint, vulnerability, payment issue or technical problem needs to be escalated and who pass it on with accurate notes.

Customer records and accuracy

Customer service often involves more administration than candidates realise. Accurate CRM notes, account updates, refund records and contact history can be important parts of the role, especially where another adviser may need to continue the case later.

How to describe customer service experience without writing a job description

One of the most common CV problems is copying the duties of the role rather than showing the candidate’s actual experience.

Instead of filling every job with generic statements, try to include some combination of:

  • average number of calls, tickets, chats or enquiries handled;
  • types of customer issues managed;
  • level of complaint or escalation responsibility;
  • CRM or ticketing systems used;
  • service targets or response times;
  • customer satisfaction or feedback results, if genuinely measured;
  • first-contact resolution or case closure performance, if available;
  • process improvements you personally contributed to;
  • coordination with other departments;
  • recognition, positive feedback or internal awards.

Useful customer service CV metrics

You do not need numbers in every bullet point, but measurable context can make your experience easier to understand.

MetricWhat it can show
Enquiries per dayWorkload and service volume
Calls or chats handledExperience in high-volume support
First-contact resolutionAbility to resolve issues without unnecessary escalation
Customer satisfaction / CSATService quality where your employer measures it
Response timeSpeed and workload management
Complaint resolution timeEfficiency in more complex cases
Quality scoreAccuracy and adherence to service standards
Retention or renewal resultsCustomer relationship impact where relevant to the role

Never invent a CSAT score, SLA result or call volume because it sounds professional. If your employer did not provide formal statistics, describe the real scale and complexity of the work instead.

Customer service CV example with no experience

You can apply for many entry-level customer service jobs without having previously held the title “Customer Service Adviser”. Retail, hospitality, reception, volunteering and even some university activities can provide relevant evidence.

Look for situations where you have:

  • answered questions from customers, guests, visitors or members of the public;
  • handled payments, returns or bookings;
  • dealt with a complaint or unhappy person;
  • explained rules, products or services;
  • used a till, booking system, database or other business software;
  • worked during busy periods while maintaining accuracy;
  • passed a problem to a supervisor appropriately;
  • worked as part of a team to solve an issue.

For candidates with little work history, our no experience CV template for Word gives additional guidance on building a CV around transferable evidence.

No-experience customer service profile example

Reliable and approachable candidate with customer-facing experience gained through retail and volunteering. Confident answering enquiries, processing transactions and helping resolve straightforward customer concerns in busy environments. Comfortable learning new systems and communicating clearly with customers and colleagues.

Customer service CV example for students

Students should not try to make limited experience sound senior. A stronger approach is to show evidence from part-time work, university, volunteering, societies or placements.

For example, a café job may demonstrate handling orders, payment accuracy, difficult conversations and working under pressure. A university society role may demonstrate answering member enquiries, coordinating events and maintaining records.

Customer service adviser, representative and consultant: should the CV be different?

The titles vary between employers, but the CV should follow the actual responsibilities rather than the title alone.

RoleLikely CV emphasis
Customer Service AdviserEnquiries, problem-solving, accounts, complaints and multichannel support
Customer Service RepresentativeHigh-volume customer contact, case resolution, CRM and service targets
Customer Care AdviserOngoing support, empathy, complaints and customer experience
Customer Service ConsultantMore detailed product/service guidance, account support or consultative service
Contact Centre AdviserCall volume, call quality, response targets, systems and escalation
Customer Support AdviserTroubleshooting, tickets, product support and issue resolution

Always use the wording from the vacancy where it accurately describes your experience. This helps the employer immediately connect your CV with the role being advertised.

How to tailor your customer service CV to a job advert

Customer service vacancies can look similar at first glance, but the emphasis may be completely different. One role may be largely telephone-based, another may focus on complaints, while another may combine customer care with sales or technical support.

Before sending your CV, identify repeated requirements in the advert. These could include:

  • inbound or outbound calls;
  • complaint resolution;
  • CRM systems;
  • email and live chat;
  • order management;
  • billing or account queries;
  • customer retention;
  • first-contact resolution;
  • working to SLA or quality standards;
  • sales or upselling;
  • technical troubleshooting;
  • regulated or sensitive customer environments.

Then make sure the most relevant genuine experience is easy to find in your profile, skills and recent employment sections.

Customer service CV format

For most candidates with a clear employment history, a reverse-chronological format is the simplest choice. Put your most recent position first and give it the most detail.

A practical order is:

  1. Name and contact details
  2. Short professional profile
  3. Customer service skills
  4. Work experience
  5. Education and relevant training
  6. Optional additional information such as languages

Candidates changing career or with very limited experience can give transferable skills greater prominence, but the CV should still make your dates and employment history clear.

How long should a customer service CV be?

One or two pages will normally provide enough space for a UK customer service CV. An entry-level candidate may fit comfortably on one page, while someone with several relevant roles may need two.

Do not remove valuable evidence simply to force the document onto one page. Equally, do not extend the CV to two pages with old or irrelevant duties. If Word unexpectedly pushes a small amount of content onto another page, see why a CV moves to a second page in Microsoft Word.

Should you send a customer service CV as Word or PDF?

Use the format requested by the employer or application system. A Word DOCX file is useful while you are editing and tailoring the CV. PDF can help preserve the visual layout once the document is complete.

If the vacancy specifically requests a Word document, send the DOCX version. If no format is specified, make sure whichever version you submit opens correctly and contains selectable text.

Common customer service CV mistakes

  • Writing only personality traits: “friendly”, “helpful” and “people person” provide little evidence on their own.
  • Copying a job description: duties do not show how you performed them.
  • Leaving out the service channel: employers may want phone, email, live chat or face-to-face experience.
  • Not naming relevant systems: CRM and ticketing experience can be important.
  • Inventing statistics: use only numbers you can explain and support.
  • Ignoring complaint experience: handling difficult situations is often more valuable than simply saying you provided good service.
  • Using the same CV for every role: a retail service role and a technical support role may require very different evidence.
  • Overloading the design: clear headings and readable text are more useful than decorative elements that make information harder to find.

Customer service CV checklist

  • Does the opening profile state what type of customer service experience you have?
  • Have you identified telephone, email, live chat or face-to-face experience?
  • Does the CV show the customer issues you actually handled?
  • Have you included complaint or escalation experience where relevant?
  • Are your CRM, ticketing or business systems named?
  • Have you included realistic workload or performance context where available?
  • Do recent roles contain more detail than older, less relevant roles?
  • Have you tailored the wording to the vacancy?
  • Have you checked spelling, dates and contact details?
  • Does the final Word or PDF file open correctly before you send it?

Customer service CV FAQs

What should I write on a CV for customer service?

Focus on the customers you supported, the channels you used, the enquiries or complaints you handled, the systems you worked with and the results or service standards you achieved. Your recent work experience should provide evidence rather than simply listing soft skills.

What is a good customer service CV summary?

A useful summary usually identifies your level of experience, service environment, main support channels and two or three relevant strengths. For example, you might mention three years of telephone and email support, complaint resolution and CRM case management.

What skills should I put on a customer service CV?

Relevant skills can include complaint handling, enquiry resolution, CRM systems, telephone support, email and live chat, order processing, refunds, account management, escalation, active listening and conflict resolution. Choose skills that match the vacancy and that you can support with real examples.

Can I write a customer service CV with no experience?

Yes. Use evidence from retail, hospitality, volunteering, reception, education or other activities where you answered questions, solved problems, handled transactions or worked directly with people. Concentrate on transferable evidence rather than trying to imitate the CV of an experienced adviser.

Should I include customer service metrics on my CV?

Include them when they are genuine and useful. Enquiry volume, customer satisfaction, first-contact resolution, response time and quality results can help employers understand your performance. If you do not have formal figures, describe the scale and complexity of your workload instead.

Can I download a customer service CV template in Word?

Yes. WordCV provides editable Microsoft Word CV templates, and dedicated customer service DOCX examples will be added to this page for free download.

Is a customer service CV different from a customer service representative resume?

The core content is similar. In the UK, “CV” is the more common term, while “resume” is used more frequently in some other countries. The important point is to tailor the document to the employer and describe the actual service responsibilities behind your job title.
